- Abstract
A test or measuring fracture toughness in pure mode II using notch specimen is proposed. This test uses a notch ring specimen load in compression. To obtain a pure mode II, it is necessary that notch and loading directions have a 33°angle. This is demonstrated experimentally and numerically. The use of notch specimen is preferable when precracking is impossible i.e. for brittle materials. However fracture toughness has to be is expressed by the critical notch stress intensity factor. This concept is presented through a local fracture criterion: the Volumetric Method. It is shown that evolution of fracture toughness in pure mode II is independent of notch radius.
