- Abstract
The chosen viewpoint in the narrative forms different planes: of evaluation, worldview, and subjective, which by interacting with each other create meaning. The article discusses possible theoretical definitions of viewpoints. Russian formalist Boris Uspensky was among the first ones to justify and define the viewpoint. Describing the relationship between the narrator and the story told he proposes four viewpoints: the ideological, the phraseological, the psychological, and the spatial-temporal. Such classification had a strong effect in narratology. Gerard Genette called it focalization. The term became the key word in studying narrative. The article talks about different conceptions of viewpoints by Mike Ball, Shlomith Rimon-Kenan, and Wolf Schmid and tries to capture its main differences and similarities. Keywords: viewpoint, focalization, narrative, narrator, character.
