- Abstract
There has been tremendous interest concerning extending the benefits of the self-commutated power electronic converters for reactive power compensation in the last few decades and different compensating topologies have been developed One of the most effective and promising reactive power controllers is the static synchronous compensator (STA TCOM). This paper presents a comprehensive review on recent advances in multilevel converter based STATCOM systems. The power quality issues, importance and the operation of the STATCOM on power transmission systems are briefly addressed The paper focuses on the major development of significant components in the STATCOM system namely, STATCOM configuration, converter topologies, modulation techniques and control strategies. Existing conventional to novel discoveries are studied and reported.
