- Abstract
Pigeon pea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.], is used for treatment of diabetes, hepatitis, measles, and to stabilize the menstrual period in the traditional folk medication. Polyphenols, especially flavonoids, have been considered as being responsible for theses beneficial efficacies on the human health. In Taiwan, three new varieties of pigeon pea with high quality have been successfully bred, which were named as Pigeon pea Taitung No.1, 2 and 3, respectively. In the present study, the ethanol extract from pigeon pea Taitung No.3 exhibited the highest total phenolic content (264 mg GAE/g), total flavonoid content (87.9 mg QE/g), antioxidant activity (27.2 mg TEAC/g), in vitro hypoglycemic activities (α-amylase inhibition: IC50 = 268 μg/ mL and α-glucosidase inhibition: IC50 = 110 μg/mL), aldose reductase inhibition activity (IC50 = 126 μg/mL) and has the ability to prevent the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) (IC50 = 99.9 μg/mL). In conclusion, pigeon pea Taitung No.3 has the potential to be developed as an element in the management of hyperglycemia.
