- Abstract
Point-of-care tests (POCTs) for syphilis can help overcome barriers to care and increase screening rates in Canada. These tests can be performed in various settings, including prenatal care and communities with syphilis outbreaks. The first syphilis POCT licensed in Canada detects treponemal antibodies, but clinical assessment is still necessary to determine the appropriate treatment and follow-up. While POCTs are beneficial, they cannot replace standard serologic laboratory tests, which are essential for confirming treatment effectiveness and diagnosing re-infections and congenital syphilis.
