- Abstract
A substantial number of clinical trials in Canada do not meet standards for registration and results reporting, and Health Canada has not implemented the duty to publicize clinical trial information. Improved coordination among research ethics boards, medical journals, research funding bodies, and Health Canada, as well as a strengthened enforcement strategy, are needed to ensure all clinical trials in Canada are registered and their results reported. Trial registration and timely reporting are important for preventing data manipulation and biases. Other countries have implemented registration and reporting requirements, and Canada should consider doing the same. Health Canada's track record in enforcing trial registration and results reporting has been inconsistent. To improve transparency, a more coordinated and transparent approach is needed, and Parliament should revisit the wording of the law to oblige all sponsors authorized by Health Canada to register trials and publish results. Communication between journals, research ethics boards, funders, and Health Canada is crucial for improving trial registration and results reporting.
