- Abstract
Background: Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. Radical prostatectomy is the best method of treatment with curative intent, however, there are several types of approach for its removal, laparoscopic radical prostatectomy offers a similar incidence recurrence with conventional open surgery approach. Objective: Determine recurrence of prostate cancer comparing open radical prostatectomy with laparoscopic in Specialty Hospital Medical Center "La Raza", in the period of January 2006 to December 2010. Material and methods: Observational, retrospective, descriptive and transversal study in Specialty Hospital National Medical Center "La Raza". 118 patients with documented prostate cancer by transrectal biopsy were studied and who underwent surgery for open and laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. Results: 32 patients who underwent laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and 86 with open approach were studied. It was found that the overall recurrence in patients undergoing LRP and ORP was 43.75 and 50.0%, respectively. Conclusions: There is no statistically significant difference in overall recurrence rate when comparing both surgical techniques, having the laparoscopic approach with a difference of 6.25% in favor. There is evidence of better functional results and long term benefits related to sexual perfomance and urinary continence.
