- Authors
Thomas, Elizabeth P.
- Abstract
Social capital has become a 'buzz word' in political and social science circles. This paper begins to explore the relevance of the concept from the perspective of those involved in development. An introduction to the theory of social capital is followed by a section where the methodology and findings of the study are presented. This leads on to the discussion of the results showing the aspects of social capital in the community. Some implications of the findings about the women's social capital for local participation and development initiatives are suggested. The paper concludes with some general comments about the usefulness of the concept of social capital in informal settlement upgrading initiatives in a developing country setting.
