ACI of the knee for patients with cartilage injuries.
- Authors
Stradley, Stephanie L.
- Abstract
The article offers information concerning the aspect of autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI), a cartilage restoration technique that can provide a longer term solution for cartilage injuries, helping to delay the onset of osteoarthritis in the patient. It notes that the ACI was initially performed in Sweden in 1994 and was then approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Further, the ACI is a two-stage procedure in which an initial arthroscopy is performed.
