- Abstract
The article discusses director Werner Herzog's films "Little Dieter Needs to Fly" and "Rescue Dawn," which deal with the imprisonment in Laos of German-born U.S. Navy pilot Dieter Dengler during the Vietnam War. Focus is given to the way in which Herzog and Dengler, in their desire to transcend defeat, understand the inevitability of war, along with Dengler's experience of making eye contact with an American pilot during World War II.
