- Abstract
This work concerns the development of a biologically inspired methodology for topology optimisation of aircraft structures. The methodology is based on the map L systems modelling of cellular division to generate the structural topology. The topology thus generated is analysed using the finite element method, and the rules that indirectly develop the topology are then evolved using a genetic algorithm for multi-objective optimisation. The methodology is demonstrated in the design of the wing box of a generic aircraft fighter. The results clearly show the suitability of the proposed method for the topology optimisation of aircraft structures.
