Handlooms deserve a pride of place.
Abstract
The article looks at the reasons for the decline in handloom industry in India in 2009. It is said that several handloom weavers have been compelled to accept jobs as construction workers and vendors. The state of the availability of yarn and other raw materials is cited as the possible problem in handlooms sector. Also noted is the impact of machines imported from China on the occupations of zardozi and chikan craftspersons in Varanasi and Lucknow regions.
