"All the pieces matter": La traducción subtitulada del lenguaje vulgar en The Wire.
- Authors
Ortiz García, Javier
- Abstract
This essay deals with the problem of the translation of vulgar language mainly from a practical perspective and analyzes three examples from three different episodes of the widely acclaimed TV show The Wire, where the use of this type of language is found within all the social and professional ranges involved. Firstly, the series is contextualized in its original geographical spectrum paying special attention to the use of vulgar language throughout the series. Secondly, we approach the different strategic possibilities the translator may consider in order to translate this type of language when it appears repeatedly. Lastly, the three examples and their official translations are qualitatively analyzed. The article concludes offering translation alternatives to that official translation; the aim of the alternative translations is to illustrate a tentative and more adequate visualization of the show, paying close attention to the translation of vulgar language.
