- Abstract
The purpose of the present article is to offer a way of understanding the aspect of Bulgarian verbs and outline its importance in learning Bulgarian by English speakers. It assumes that as a grammatical concept it is entirely new to the learner. Verb aspect in Slavic languages has a long history and has been studied extensively; it is a feature both fascinating and complex. Striving to accurately interpret verb aspect and underline its key role in gaining command of more advanced grammar points such as Imperative Mood, Aorist Tense, Past Indefinite Tense and Passive Voice, is the study book Advanced Bulgarian as a Foreign Language by Dobrinka Paskaleva. It has been approved for use and tested in the Bulgarian language course for foreign medical and dental students of Plovdiv’s Medical University. The principal teaching method is verbal communication without mandatory an intermediary language, however the limited usage of English is required for comparison between the languages. As a result of the theoretical juxtaposition and proposed practical steps, students are able to successfully overcome complicated linguistic problems. By drawing parallels between the aspect of Bulgarian verbs and corresponding temporal structures in English, the book illustrates similarities which aid in digesting the new concepts of the studied language. The author gives understanding for specific usage. The textbook is in possession of non-standard and pragmatic operability, gives highly nuanced examples, a systematic layout. Herein one may conclude that the practical internalization of Bulgarian by English speaking students depends on their grasp of verb aspect. Verb aspect also plays a key role in the learner’s adjustment to the systematic nature of the language. This allows them to develop proficiency and communication skills in various real life situations. Seeking parallels in different languages not only expands grammar, but also offers an approach for foreign language teaching. Progress in teaching rests upon comparing and contrasting native to foreign language.
