- Title
TREATIES AND HUMAN RIGHTS: THE ROLE OF LONG-TERM TRENDS.
- Authors
CHILTON, ADAM S.; POSNER, ERIC A.
- Abstract
The authors convey their thoughts about a study by several scholars who claim that human rights improve after countries ratify human rights treaties. The authors argue that the positive correlations between human rights treaties and outcomes by the study may be due to failure to account for time trends. Countries' human rights records show clear serial correlation over time. A graph showing human rights scores and ratification of the Convention against Torture from 1950 to 2010 is presented.
