The article highlights the state responsibility in the meaningful and safe birthing experience in the U.S. Topics discussed include the increasing mistreatment of birthing women by health care professionals in the U.S., preference of the U.S. for physicians over midwives as the primary care providers for low-risk births amidst maternal and infant mortality and morbidity, and the necessity for comprehensive and supportive licensing and regulatory schemes to legitimize the practice of midwifery.
