- Abstract
In this short article we compile the existing information about the Red-Knobbed Coot (Fulica cristata) in the province of Albacete (Castilla-La Mancha, SE Spain), in the last decades. Our aim is to provide updated information concerning the breeding of this species in this province. We have collected 92 records, from at least 29 different individuals. Sightings were made in 9 wetlands between 1997 and April 2023, covering the whole annual cycle and mainly in the lagoon complexes of Pétrola, Corral-Rubio and La Higuera. According with our data, possible, probable or certain, 15 pairs are breeding in this province (6, 4 and 5, respectively), during 12 breeding periods and in 7 different wetlands. Among the confirmed breeding pairs, 3 were mixed with Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra), all sighted at Ontalafia lagoon. Given the relevance of the data in the context of Castilla-La Mancha and Spain, we propose to include the Pétrola complex as an Expansion Site for the species in the Strategy for the Conservation of the coot in Spain. We also recommend the global protection of the wetlands of the Pétrola complex and the restoration of its main wetlands. Furthermore, we consider it necessary to establish a ban on hunting waterfowl.
