- Authors
Burton, Gary P.
- Abstract
The article discusses the history of Baptist churches in Montgomery, Alabama, highlighting the involvement of Antioch Baptist Church, Bethel Baptist Church, Elim Baptist Church, and Rehoboth Baptist Church in the Alabama Baptist Association. It is said that in 1923 Montgomery's branch of the Woman's Missionary Union (WMU) led an effort to recognize the history of the four churches with memorial stones. Also noted are the work of pastor James McLemore in founding churches, the ministry of slave Caesar Blackwell, and anti-missions sentiment among Alabama Baptists as a result of Primitive Baptist theology.
