- Abstract
The article examines annual baptism counts in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), representing United States trends, and in the Baptist General Convention of Texas, representing state trends, from 1950 to 2008. Topics discussed include cycles of rising and falling baptism numbers, the impact in Texas of the formation of the rival Southern Baptists of Texas Convention (SBTC), the problem of non-reporting churches, and the implications of the data for Baptist church growth and the effectiveness of Baptist outreach.
