- Abstract
During the last one hundred and fifty years of transformation and upheaval, Turkish society has witnessed some socioeconomic divisions. The division between groups that accepted a secular lifestyle with modernization and lost the institution of religion's decisiveness on life, and those that did not abandon religious values despite modernization, has affected many aspects of social and political life until today. Reflections of this circumstance can also be seen in art and literature. In Turkish cinema, as in Turkish novels, some works center on the division between seculars and conservatives. Bir Başkadır, written and directed by Berkun Oya and consisting of eight episodes, examines the division between seculars and conservatives from an individual rather than a political standpoint. The distinctions in interpretation and explanation of events between individuals who follow conventional lives and care about religious values and those who pursue a secular lifestyle are presented. Furthermore, the way individuals perceive one another is explained regarding the lifestyles they embrace. Different viewpoints derive from the distinction between "Us" and "Them" in terms of where the individuals stand in relation to one another. Secular individuals, in particular, experience a shift in their attitudes toward the conservative in the "other" position. Furthermore, the movie, which concentrates on the individual's uneasiness, conveys the message that the individual will relax psychologically as they get to know themselves. Topics such as the distinction between "Us" and "Them," uneasiness of the individual, and the discovery of oneself in the "other," which are all central to the fiction of the TV series Bir Başkadır, will be examined in this study.
