- Title
Intersectoral Collaboration of Cultural Heritage Institutions -- Unused Potential of the Web.
- Abstract
The concept of place, role and purpose of cultural heritage institutions (archives, museums, libraries) has significantly changed under the influence of rapid development of information technologies in modern society. Users interested in cultural legacy that is being kept in repositories of cultural institutions are finding alternative ways for reaching wanted contents every day, mostly by using simplified access to various information. The cultural institutions had to find their own adequate response to challenges imposed by expansion of the new mass media. Archives, museums and libraries, increasingly available in public and in cyber space with the individual presentations of their collections, have also initiated conjoint projects in creating digital collections and Web portals. This kind of cooperation can be observed on global, international and national level, as well as through regional and local initiatives. In spite of increasing tendency of joint cooperation on global level, in our country awareness of the importance of joint performances and strategies in order to influence social currents using new technologies is still low. Financial resources do not have to be the main excuse for unused potentials of the Web, when it comes to the cultural heritage institutions. One should bear in mind that the Internet, as a modern means of communication, provides a wide range of possibilities, where knowledge and inventive approach are often the most valuable resources.
