- Abstract
The paper describes an attempt to breed semi-free ranging red deer and wild boar in the Republic of Karelia. The paper provides data on natural food sources, the diet of both species, trophic relations, and the damage red deer made to trees during the first year of their stay in the enclosure. The rowan was found to be a very important component in the red deer winter diet (58.8% of all browsed shoots), whereas pine and spruce were of low importance (0.5 and 0.1% of all browsed shoots, respectively). Intensive supplemental feeding of wild boars significantly reduced their digging activity and its negative impact on forest stands. The keeping of a large number of wild boars in a 400 ha enclosure for five years resulted in the damage of 20.7% of spruces and 3.7% of pines larger than 20 cm in diameter by partial baring of their roots.
