- Abstract
In this article the author discusses union membership in the United States. It is noted that the author has been a member of the Carpenters Union in Portland, Oregon and Boston, Massachusetts, for thirty five years. A number of topics are addressed including the decline in wages in the construction industry between 1973 and 2002, the impact of globalization on local building projects in the form of foreign, non-English speaking, nonunion workers, and the importance of political partnership to unions.
