- Abstract
This article focuses on the painting "Still Life with Parrots" by Jan Davidsz de Heem and the artist's life in 17th century Europe. The article discusses trends in Dutch art during the 1600s, noting the prominence of still-life paintings and how the shift from simple paintings to ornate, or "pronkstillevan," paintings was lead by De Heem. De Heem's "pronkstillevan" works are characterized by many objects, textures, and colors crowded onto the canvas. "Still Life with Parrots" is described as being of large size and containing birds, shellfish, food, tableware and glassware, textiles, and a background landscape. The article also presents details on de Heem's background and family.
