The book has not disappeared — 3 billion paper books were sold in the US alone last year (http://www.economist.com/blogs/babbage/2010/03/electronic_publishing). E-readers and similar devices are still no match for the technology known as the book. However, new reading technologies are worthy of consideration, as they provide additional means of promoting reading.
