- Title
Studies Propose Targeted Screening of Blood for West Nile Virus.
- Authors
Kuehn, Bridget M.
- Abstract
The article reports that two studies have suggested that targeted testing of the blood supply would be a more effective way to screen for West Nile virus. Blood supplies have been screened in the United States since it was discovered that West Nile virus can spread through blood in 2002. Individual and pooled blood sample testing have been used. The studies, published in the "New England Journal of Medicine" and the "Annals of Internal Medicine," suggest that blood screening that targets regions and climates predisposed to the virus could be more cost-effective.
