- Abstract
The horse is one of the "five animals" in the Liao Dynasty, and is mainly the Mongolian horse, a native horse breed on the Mongolian grassland. In the Liao Dynasty, horse husbandry institutions can be divided into government-run and private-owned models, and their grazing methods are also divided into two types: one is concentrated grazing and the other is scattered grazing. Horses played an important role in the society of the Liao Dynasty: the emperor reflected the monarch’s favor and attention by presenting and rewarding horses; horses were irreplaceable items in tribute, trade and daily life; the military conquest of the Liao people was good at running. Cavalry is mainly used; horses are often used in sports competitions and religious culture. The unique role of horses in the military made their status surpass that of cattle, sheep and camels, which affected the rise and fall of the Liao Dynasty to a certain extent.
