- Abstract
In sugar industry the roller mill is used for crushing the sugar cane. The roller mill is having rotating shafts and journal bearing working at high load conditions and they are subjected to abrasive wear. In the present investigation, the surface modification technique is adopted for the journal of the three roller motorized system. The laboratory scale three roller motorized system was designed and developed by simulating the field conditions. A layer of metal was deposited on the journal surface using two commercially available electrodes to reduce the wear. Accordingly, the untreated, and both welded journals were used in the developed test rig and tested under contaminated conditions. The microstructure of the welding materials and base metal were examined by using metallurgical microscope. The bearing temperatures and power consumption were measured. Further the mass loss from the journal for different test conditions was estimated. The Scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the surface phenomenon of tribological pair of journal and bearing. It is observed that the modified journal shaft using electric arc welding shows minimum mass loss compare to the substrate (EN8) journal. The untreated journal and bearing with contaminated condition shows maximum material removal. The SEM images of the worn surfaces of bearing and treated journal with welding electrodes showed minimum wear under the contaminated condition.
