- Abstract
Protcinous macromolecules in ascitic fluids of 21 malignant and five benign origins were compared with those of 22 sera with respect to four different enzyme activities and the nature and composition of the proteins. The ascitic fluids were found to contain twice as much glycoproteins which were soluble after heating at 80°C for 30 minutes, although the total protein content was half of the serum or less. The soluble protein after heating consists mainly of identified α1-acid glycoprotein and prealbumin and unidentified α globulins. The growth enhancing activity of the ascitic fluids for the cells in culture, which was reported previously, appears to be attributed partly to the effect of α1-acid glycoprotein identified in this paper.
