- Abstract
Backgrounds and career paths of athletic directors at NCAA-member institutions have changed over the years. This investigation examined each athletic director's highest degree and its program of study, years of coaching experience, prior experience working in intercollegiate athletics, whether he or she had one or more degrees from the current institution, were promoted from within that institution, and years in the current position. Online biographies were reviewed for the entire population of athletic directors. Several significant differences were found across divisions and between males and females. While athletic directors differ in the majors of their highest degrees, the most popular major across all divisions has become sport management. While coaching continues to be an entry point for some athletic directors, in Division I and especially for males, coaching no longer appears to be a prerequisite experience for becoming an athletic director. Division I female athletic directors were more likely to have had prior coaching experience and previous experience working in the same athletic department. Athletic directors in Division III had longer tenures than did athletic directors in Divisions I and II.
