THE GARDEN OF EDEN AND NOAH EPISODES: REWRITING SCRIPTURE IN 3 BARUCH.

- Abstract
Despite the vast interest in Apocalyptic writing, 3 Baruch has elicited little scholarly interest, particularly in terms of its use of scripture. In general, scholars have dismissed Baruch's recounted journey through the lower heavens as being little more than a curiosity. However, by regarding 3 Baruch as a serious text, and approaching its analysis through the lens of Rewritten Scripture, I argue that a considered and identifiable theological purpose is revealed. In this article I explore Rewritten Scripture's utility as a tool for analysing 3 Baruch. Drawing on Alexander's criteria in particular, I examine 3 Baruch 4's rendering of the Garden of Eden and Noah stories, to highlight how the author makes universal claims about human free will and God's action in the world. In doing this I highlight a number of aspects within the narrative that have previously gone unnoticed. The study concludes that Rewritten Scripture is indeed a valuable analytic tool, even for texts that do not fall under a strict and narrow definition of the genre.
