- Abstract
Dissimulation has been studied as political phenomenon of the 17th century and religious nicodemism as religious phenomenon of the 16th century. In his study, Vittorio Frajese shows that dissimulation in writing and the expression of political and religious thinking has been started in 15th century with Humanism. It is a lasting institution of Italian culture which ends in 18th century with the arrival of French Army. The article analyses the most important writing dissimulation techniques: the dialog (Valla, Doni, Bruno, Galileo), the allegory (Alberti, Doni, Bruno), the Masque (Buonaccorsi), the fake confutation, the manuscript tradition (Sarpi), the averroism (Pomponazzi, Bruno, Pietro Gabrielli, Antonio Oliva) and at last the true simulation of Tommaso Campanella. Then, the author analyses the censorship forms and trial techniques used by repressive institutions (Holy Office and Index) to fight these forms of dissimulated thinking transmission.
