- Abstract
This document is a review of the book "A Dublin Magdalene Laundry: Donnybrook and Church-State Power in Ireland." The book provides a detailed history of the Donnybrook Magdalene Laundry, the first Magdalene asylum in Ireland controlled by a convent. It explores the role of Catholic institutions in running these establishments and profiting from women's unpaid labor. The book also discusses the controversies surrounding the Religious Sisters of Charity, who ran the Donnybrook asylum. It examines the architectural design, economic aspects, and relationship with the criminal justice system of the laundry. Additionally, it highlights the importance of contemporary archaeology and material culture in understanding historical institutional abuse. The book concludes with the Magdalene Names Project, which provides evidence and resources to survivors. It offers a comprehensive account of the Irish system of institutionalization and sheds light on the alliance between the State and the Catholic Church. The book is a valuable resource for researchers, survivors, and those interested in Irish history and institutional violence.
