The article focuses on the history of free people of color in the Great Dismal Swamp community in Gates County, North Carolina, prior to the U.S. Civil War. The author explains that the community consisted of both free blacks and Native Americans, explores the history of race relations in North Carolina, and examines the economic history of the County.
