An essay is presented on an event in which the Mississippi River has nearly dried up. The author relates that it was in 1923 or 1924 that winter and spring seasons were dry. By June, it was noticed that the river was not as high as its usual level and was getting lower and lower. By September, the author mentions that the river had gotten so low that a sandbar had appeared in the middle, forming a long island dividing the river into two small streams on either side.
