- Abstract
This article explores the impact of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) on the severity of dengue in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The study, conducted in Taiwan using data from the Ministry of Health, found that RA patients on DMARDs, particularly biological/target-synthetic DMARDs (b/tsDMARDs), had a higher risk of severe outcomes such as death or hospitalization compared to non-RA patients. The research suggests that the immunosuppressive effects of DMARDs may hinder the body's ability to respond to dengue infection, leading to more severe complications. The findings are important for RA patients receiving DMARDs, especially those who are dengue-naïve travelers, as they should be aware of the potential risks and closely monitored for dengue and its complications.
