- Abstract
This article aimed to understand the impact of illness in childhood cancer survivors and in their families, and to explore the role that the hospital institution can play during the transition processes from pediatric to adult health care service. Psychoanalytic research was conducted in a public hospital considered reference center in Pediatric Oncology. In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 adolescents and their mothers. Data analysis was based on the psychoanalytic approaches of Freud and Lacan, originating two interpretations: (1) the incidence of the Real on survivors and their mothers and the effects of non-differentiation on the Imaginary register and of inhibition to sustain their own project in the future; and (2) the alienation effect on the subjects and in their bodies produced by the idealization of hospital institution and its biomedical knowledge. Drawing from the interviews, it was possible to identify problems related to the type of attachment among the interviewees, and the hospital institution. In conclusion, it is necessary to create an intervention methodology that expands the transition process by including the perspective “journeying illness”, going beyond the transition from adolescence to adulthood and/or to the transition from pediatric to adult health care service.
