- Abstract
In reptiles, these cells are small, with an elliptic shape and central nuclei, and their number varies from 25 to 350 thrombocytes per 100 leukocytes.1 Beyond their primary function in hemostasis of initiating blood clotting, these cells are unique in having multitasking abilities. Thrombocytes are the nonmammalian equivalent to platelets. Notably, the thrombocyte with a phagocytosed hemogregarine gametocyte also had an abnormal shape and carried a hemoparasite three times its size.
