The article presents a study by S. L. Carter focusing on absolute cancer genomics, published in the current issue of the journal. The study shows that calculating absolute copy numbers in cancer genome sequences identifies disease-associated genes and offers insights into tumor evolution and heterogeneity. It shows that cancers with higher ploidy gain DNA by whole-genome duplication rather than by multiple independentgains of genomic material.
