- Abstract
A vast number of athletes use hypoxic training as a supplemental training method for performance enhancement. However, the physiological and functional (e.g. performance) effects of different modalities are still not fully clear. The differences between various hypoxic modalities should be well understood, if one wishes to beneficially apply them to an individual athlete. Moreover, this enables optimal selection and adjustment of the modality to the training goals of the athlete. According to the current body of knowledge the "Sleep high - train low" protocol seems to be the most efficient providing benefits for both altitude and sea level performance even in elite athletes. When performing and monitoring hypoxic training protocols special vigilance should be placed on individual differences in responses to hypoxic stimuli. It seems that different hypoxic training protocols can provide some benefits for performance; therefore athletes should not be discouraged to employ them. In this paper, a short overview and technological possibilities of hypoxic applications are presented followed by the most often used protocols, their effects and application possibilities.
