- Title
LIFE AFTER THE PRESIDENCY: JIMMY CARTER AS SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER.
- Authors
Berggren, D. Jason
- Abstract
For his many humanitarian efforts, especially his work with the Carter Center, James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, Jr., has often been called the best former president the United States has ever had. This article focuses on an important, yet underappreciated, part of his post-presidential life, his role as a Sunday school teacher at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia. Though he has taught Sunday school most of his adult life, including a few classes as president, he started doing it again after he left the presidency. It is a key part of his post-presidential routine. Several of his books are based on his lessons. His Sunday school class provides a unique view into the post-presidency. Carter as Sunday school teacher is a reflection of a strong religious faith, but it is also an occasion to defend his presidency and promote his post-presidential work.
