- Abstract
The article describes an opal that exhibited an interesting and unusual growth pattern. The opal was examined by staff members at the Gem Testing Laboratory in Jaipur, India. The 14.04 carat oval cabochon is described as having a semitransparent, colorless to milky white appearance with distinct play-of-color. It was observed that the play-of-color patches appeared to be restricted to zones or planes with magnification and a fiber-optic light. The cellular growth structure also showed unexpected whitish zones when the stone was examined.
