- Abstract
The present summary describes the Latin-German edition and investigation of Thomas Murner's translation of the "Aeneid" from the year 1515. The edition includes both Murner's translation and the Latin original text on which Murner based his translation. The editor Julia Frick emphasizes the synoptic presentation of both texts in order to enable the intended bilingual reading by Murner. However, the edition does not include the woodcuts that Murner had taken from a Vergil edition from 1502. Frick also examines the sources that Murner relied on for his translation and presents a version of the Latin text that is close to the translator. The text deals with the edition of Murner's German translation of the "Aeneid" and investigates various aspects of the translation. It is noted that some readings in Murner's textual sources cannot be found and that the critical apparatus contains erroneous readings that do not contribute to the constitution of the edited Vergil text. The edition is based on the first print from 1515 and includes emendations by the printer Gregor Hofmann. Investigations into the genesis of the translation and Murner's linguistic strategies are also presented. The reception history of the translation is analyzed based on reprints. Despite some doubts about certain theses and hypotheses, the dissertation is considered to be of high quality and enriching for Murner research.
