- Abstract
The disappearance of Arofel's shield in Wolfram's ›Willehalm‹ is striking. It initially survives the encounter between Arofel and Willehalm almost without a scratch - ending in an early defeat of the Persian. The margrave kills Arofel in spite of his plea for grace and takes the shield from his body. This essay shows that henceforth Willehalm carries not only a valuable shield, but also a material reminder of Arofel's highly disputable death until its disappearance in a burning monastery. As against the acquittance of the material shield, its reminding function remains emblematic in the narrative and ›rematerializes‹ itself in the brand on Arofel's horse - with profound consequences for Willehalm.
