- Abstract
The article examines the role of repression in the novel "A Pale View of Hills," by Kazuo Ishiguro by describing how it operates at the level of the community, in interpersonal relationships, and in protagonist Etsuko's private thoughts. In the memory of Etsuko, acts if repression were represented through narrative and symbol patterns. A definition of repression is presented. Etiquette was represented in the novel as a social tool for the evasion of repressed issues.
