- Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyze the role and importance of the false merchant's account (vv. 604-621) for the development of dramatic action. This scene has been considered by many scholars as accessory and unwarranted (cf. Poe 1974: 19), while others judge it important only because it would show the moral character of Odysseus, since it is the product of his ruse and its function is to guide Neoptolemus shrewdly in his absence (Whitlock-Blundell 1987: 324). However, it can be argued that the scene has a twofold aim. The first is to function as a sort of reminder to Philoctetes of his past sufferings caused by Odysseus and a warning about the threat hanging over him now. The second is to know the precise terms of the oracle ttered by Heleno (vv. 610-613). Although it might be thought that it is not entirely reliable, the information provided finds an indisputable assertion in Neoptolemus when, after returning the bow, he tries for the last time to persuade Philoctetes (vv. 1338-1339).
