- Title
Grains of Truth and the Value of Inside Information.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the techniques and processes that are used by material engineers for assessing engineering instruments and structures. In 1941, the United States Federal Maritime Commission launched a large-scale expansion of the marine fleet with the Liberty ship forming the primary component of the expansion. However in the year 1946, over 360 Liberty ships had suffered major fractures. It was found that a small defect, often associated with welding led to the failure of the ships. The challenge faced by a material engineer is to understand how such factors influence the safety of engineering components. Various strategies that are used by materials engineers for examining engineering instruments are: standard assessment methods, mechanistic modeling, and features testing.
