- Abstract
Gametic chromosome numbers were determined and observations on the meiotic behavior were made on 45 accessions belonging to 39 species of Compositae. The genus Sommerfeltia and 11 species are investigated cytologically for the first time. These are as follows: Eupatorium commersoni. (Cass.) Hieron. (n=ca.20-22), Eupatorium saltense Hieron. (n=ca. 24), Baccharis linearis (Ruiz et Pav.) Pers. (n=9), Sommerfeltia spinulosa (Sprengel) Less. (n=9), Gnaphalium gaudichaudianum DC. (n=14), Gnapahlium cheirantifolium Lam. (n=ca. 14), Tessaria dodoneifolia (Hook. et Arn.) Cabrera (n=10), Gaillardia megapotamica (Spreng.) Baker var. scabiosoides (Arn.) Baker (n=18), Senecio glaber Less. var. pratensis (Phil.) Cabrera (n=20), Senecio otites Kuntze ex DC. (n=ca. 52), and Senecio zosteraefolius Hook. et Arn. (n=20). Different chromosome numbers to those reported previously in the literature were found, for Vernonia flexuosa Sims (n=ca. 30-32), Eupatorium laevigatum Lam. (n=ca. 14), Conyza floribunda Kunth (n=ca. 27-28), and Grindelia pulchella Dunal (n=12, 18). The significance of some of the results in relation to taxonomic and evolutionary problems is discussed.
