- Abstract
The world of publishing in the United States thrives west of the Hudson. In fact, for the independent publishers on the other side of the Hudson, New York is a backwater, the publishing of books made into movies with expensive publishing practices established in another century. The new independents many of them with women editors, are taking strides forward, searching for literature, for books that will last rather than books that will sell. Part of what has allowed this movement is digital printing. For some it is an ugly secret, for others, the wave of the future. The future of independent publishing, the search to find the literature of the next century and then to capture the attention of the reviewers and critics that transform ordinary books into literature, is the subject of this conversation. Editing does not happen behind closed doors. It isn't childbirth; it's a job. Time for editors to come out of the closet and explain how publishing and editing work, where digital printing fits in and how publishing will be framed in this brave new world.
