- Title
MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT AND THE MOTHERHOOD OF FEMINISM.
- Authors
FORD, THOMAS H.
- Abstract
The article examines the works of 18th century British author Mary Wollstonecraft for her portrayal of the mother-daughter relationship, which has been a target in the feminist project of exposing the culture that perpetuates the oppression of women. Feminists have turned to this when discussing the development of the feminist movement itself. While Wollstonecraft was celebrated as the mother of English-language feminism, she was simultaneously a subject to feminist criticism beginning in the 1970s. Wollstonecraft's works "Vindication of the Rights of Woman," "The Wrongs of Woman: Or, Maria," and "A Short Residence" are discussed for her symbolic position as the foremother of feminism.
